JukeFly.com review

I came across jukefly.com on a few other blogs, and I thought I would give it a shot. JukeFly allows you to run a small server application on a PC, then access any audio media files on that PC via a flash player on the jukefly.com site. It also allows you to create friends and share access to each other’s libraries.

Setup was a little odd for me. After the server is installed it is configured using the jukefly.com flash application on the site. I kept right clicking the juke fly icon looking for options or settings. After pointing to my music collection, it indexed about 9000 songs, then uploaded that list of music with tag information to the juke fly site.

The sound quality at my office was great with no noticeable difference in quality from the original files. One thing that I knew could get aggravating, is accidentally closing the browser window, causing you to re-login to the site and select your music or play list again. To get around this I installed Bubbles. This allows me to keep the browser with juke fly open and minimized to my system tray. Another concern I had was bandwidth use. Monitoring traffic on the process, it seems to use up about 15Kb/s of bandwidth. This was a lot less than I had expected, and I was very happy with it.

I am not using this application as my primary media player. The web browser / flash inteface is a bit bigger than windows media player or winamp, but I find it alot more convenient. I no longer have you worry about syncing up audio files between my home, office, and laptop.

It’s funny when I hear people talk about iPod killers. In my opinion with services like 3G, applications and services that can stream music to your phone, car or computer are going to be the real iPod killers.
